Nasuni « Storage Gaga

Nasuni « Storage Gaga

One particular company that captured my imagination and addresses the storage performance portion is Nasuni. Of course, they are quite inventive with the Cloud Storage Gateway approach. Nasuni comes up with a Cloud Storage Gateway filer appliance, which can be either a physical 1U server or as a VMware or Hyper-V virtual appliance sitting on-premise at the customer’s site.

InfoWorld Webinar with Walsh Group and Nasuni to Detail How One of the Nation’s Largest Contractors Solved the Challenge of Enabling Multi-Site Enterprise Storage – Press Releases – News

Nasuni® announced today that it will participate along with the infrastructure architect from The Walsh Group, the 17th largest contractor in the U.S. and a Nasuni customer, in an InfoWorld webinar titled “Solving Multi-Site Enterprise Storage Management Challenges.”

Managing storage across today's enterprise presents a number of challenges, and those challenges are made even more difficult when IT needs to manage multiple locations. As the number of distributed teams and departments continues to rise, IT needs to be able to deliver secure shared storage without sacrificing the performance that users have become accustomed to.

BIM Emerging as Construction's Legal Standard of Care

BIM Emerging as Construction's Legal Standard of Care

Salmon indicated building industry professionals have been advised in the past not to share their Models for fear of being sued. "Now, it is possible to be sued if you do not use Building Information Modeling software in a manner consistent with emerging industry standards," Salmon says. "You might be embarrassed if your Model is inaccurate, but it is better to be embarrassed and have a successful project than it is to be sued for not having a Building Information Model."

Why is the data storage industry locked in by hardware?

Why is the data storage industry locked in by hardware?

"And the potential separation of storage hardware and software is not restricted to the use of open source OSes. Vendors such as LeftHand and DataCore, for example, already offer their SAN products as software, while the likes of Nasuni and TwinStrata sell virtual NAS devices that only exist as software too. Logic seems to suggest that one day it will be common for customers in businesses of all sizes to buy storage operating systems, processing power and disk hardware separately. But when that day will come is open to speculation. "

Acrobat Acrobat X Pro and Bluebeam PDF Revu 9: AECbytes Product Review

Lachmi Khemlani has another great software comparison/review in AECbytes:

"In addition to the new 3D PDF support, Revu has many more things going for it to recommend it to AEC users—Revit support, ProjectWise integration, Visual Search, an extensive set of markup and measurement tools, and the ability for multiple project team members to collaborate on a document, in real time as well as offline. Its interface is much more visual than Acrobat’s and is likely to appeal to architects..."

Using the Cloud for Backup? You're Missing the Point

Much of the attention lavished on cloud storage has focused on backup; however, the massively redundant nature of cloud architecture ensures data protection inherently. Those who back up data that's already stored in the cloud are wasting their time. Cloud storage does not require backup. Here's how you can leverage cloud systems with their unprecedented levels of reliability and data durability into your own data center.

The Four Trends Driving the Future of Data Center Infrastructure Design and Management

"During the data center’s next decade, opportunities to improve efficiency and optimize performance will exist throughout the three cycles: design and deployment, operations, and management and planning...It all starts at the design and deployment stage, when companies can leverage pre-engineered solutions and high-density architectures to reduce the time, space and capital required for construction of the building. During operation, data center managers can reduce costs by using efficient technologies and strategies while simultaneously decreasing downtime costs by employing high-availability configurations."

Does the relative "Downtime Cost" of Healthcare seems reasonable ?

Production rollout of cloud storage

thought I’d share some updated info on how things are going with our production Nasuni rollout:

We’ve pushed ~700 gb of data to the new server, 5 mission critical shares including our IT share (source code, documentation, etc), accounting, sales, users and our entire production share for the commercial division.   I’ve also created a 2nd volume as a backups target where we’ve pointed our Acronis backup image to and will migrate existing backup jobs to over time.

The result thus far regarding the compression and d-dupe ratio is just under 35% savings:

The HardTRUTH in BLACK and WHITE

Running out of File Storage Again?
Someone just dumped 20GB of photos and music on your CADD Share?
Have to move things around before you can work on that next project?
Backups take too long?
Those 1-TB USB drives are too slow and unreliable?
The RFP asks about ‘Disaster Recovery’?
Your auditors and insurance query you about your ‘business continuity’?
A co-location site is too expensive?
Your clients called about their data during the flood?
You need something easy, pay as you go and works with your existing environment?

Top Threats to Cloud Computing, v.1.0

Top Threats to Cloud Computing, v.1.0

Public cloud computing risks are numerous enough to field a top 10 -- or even more. Professional organizations and CIOs are developing threat lists to help them come to grips with the public cloud, an entity that will continue to seep into the enterprise IT environment whether they like it or not.

Some lists of top public cloud computing risks are sweeping and philosophical, such as the Top Threats to Cloud Computing, v.1.0, developed by the Cloud Security Alliance. Most include some combination of the following items:

The Nasuni Filer is a drop-in replacement for Windows file servers, suitable for use in a medium-enterprise environment with anywhere from several hundred gigabytes of traditional file storage up to dozens of terabytes. The filer integrates well with Active Directory, provides shared resources to users in the traditional CIFS / Windows manner (mapped drivers, UNC names, etc.), and is highly secure at both the file level (with support for NTFS permissions), and at the cloud level with strong AES-256 security and tier one cloud storage providers. With built-in disaster recovery and restore features, the Nasuni filer also eases continuity concerns for primary file storage.

Affordable NAS DR in Minutes from the Cloud

Affordable NAS DR in Minutes from the Cloud:

"Cloud-based file services can offer some attractive benefits and features, but the recovery can still be a problem as the time or cost to replace a failed NAS system may be unacceptable. Cloud-based NAS systems that run as a virtual machine offer an alternative solution providing affordable NAS DR in a few minutes."

Technology News: Data Storage: Storage: The Achilles' Heel of Data Center Virtualization:

"Unstructured data is growing by 60 percent per year, according to industry analyst firm IDC, creating a need for vastly different storage economics. More than 20 percent of all compute workloads are now virtualized, creating a need for vastly different shared storage architectures, and the cloud is expected to account for 14 percent of all IT spending by 2014 -- creating a need for storage that works both on-premise and in the cloud."

BIM and the Cloud--The Economics of Private Cloud Computing: AECbytes Feature Article

BIM and the Cloud--The Economics of Private Cloud Computing: AECbytes Feature Article:

Great article by Chris France
"Traditional IT vs. Private CloudTraditional IT is the way most firms operate today. They design, build, and manage their own IT infrastructure inside their offices. There is an IT maxim that was true 30 years ago and will be true 50 years from now: “Centralize when you can, Distribute when you have to.” Until recently, we HAD to distribute design applications and design data to be close to the end user. When it became possible to successfully push a “BIM Workstation” to a data center, we entered into a new era of IT. What we once had to distribute, we can now centralize to gain better capabilities, economies of scale, and cost reductions. Below are the metrics of a typical “traditional IT” 300-person firm."
